Small businesses can be hard to grow, with lots of competition existing from chains and other start-ups. It is important to know how to use marketing to your advantage and the more successful you are with it, the more sustainable your business will be. Read our tips below to find out how you can successfully market your small business.

Use direct mail

Whilst direct mail is often considered to be a thing of the past due to the internet age, it can still be a great tool to use for your start-up. Studies by the DMA (Data & Marketing Association) have shown that direct mail is generally more successful than marketing online or via email – people are more likely to look at and interact with direct mail. It’s also relatively easy and inexpensive to create a direct mail campaign – leaflet printing is popular and can be done cheaply.

Send emails and utilise social media to your advantage

Emails can still be used effectively to market your small business. Most people are connected to the internet nowadays and sending an email campaign can be relatively cheap. Programs such as Mailchimp can be used to create email campaigns and allow you to design everything and tailor your campaign to a specific audience, which is more likely to bring in customers to your start-up. If you have a website, you can include a newsletter form on it so that people can sign up to get regular updates from you. You can also collect email addresses in a more traditional way and send out campaigns that way. Many people use social media nowadays so setting up some social media pages for your business can help to advertise it and bring more customers in.

Flyers

As with direct mail, flyers are sometimes considered to be a thing of the past. However, they can still be useful and can be created and distributed on a small budget – it’s also relatively easy to put flyers up in your local area. Make sure any flyers you create are eye-catching and people will be drawn to them – if you add your social media/website links to the flyer, people may then be inspired to join up and you can then market to them in another way as well.
